“We All Need Jesus” – Missionary Friendship Baptist Church Mission to Save Souls – Harlan Enterprise

Blessed and honored to be a pastor since 2002, Sean Daniels was hired in February 2019 to serve the congregants at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Cawood.

“The church I currently serve as a pastor is also the church I grew up in and where I was saved and baptized,” he said. “After pastoring other churches, I was blessed to be able to ‘come home’ in February 2019 to Pastor Friendship.”

Pastor Daniels is married to his wife Kelly and they are parents to four sons. Daniels’ wife is also a speech teacher for the local school system.
Celebrating three years on the pulpit of the Missionary Friendship Baptist Church, Daniels reflects on the growth of God’s church.

“We had a wonderful first year as the Church grew from a congregation of about 30-35 to more than 100 on a regular basis,” he said. “We have started the youth program and we welcome on average more than 60 young people per week. That was until Covid hit.

Even during the pandemic, the faithful have come together to hear the Word.
“In March 2020, we, like many other churches, began looking at how we can minister during a pandemic,” Daniels said. “Luckily, thanks to the generosity of the local owners of the Village Center Mall, we were offered to use the parking lot in front of Belk’s empty building at the mall. We started having drive-in services there Easter 2020. We are here February 2022 and the drive-in services have become a wonderful friendship outreach as we continue to have drive-in services in optional on Sunday afternoon as the pandemic continues. It’s amazing how, even in the midst of a global pandemic, the Lord has continued to grow His Church and bless.

Daniels said drive-thru services at the Village Center Mall have at times drawn more than 200 people and by Easter 2021, Sunday services are estimated to be close to 300 people.

“We had several contacts with us to tell us that they don’t normally attend church services, but they felt comfortable attending the mall,” he said. “Others said that because of their illness, such as cancer and autoimmune issues, the mall offered them a safe choice during this pandemic. It has become a central place in Harlan County to share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ with all!

Decisions made to worship Jesus have transformed lives for the better.
“However, the most important results of recent years, both in the Friendship Church and in the Outreach of the Mall, are decisions for Jesus,” Daniels said. “We have seen 57 decisions for Christ and baptisms, and 32 more joining the Church for a total of 89 additions in Church membership since 2019, even during a pandemic. It’s God!

In 2021, Sunday worship services inside the gate have resumed at the church while still offering the option of drive-in services each week, while church leaders carefully monitor current conditions.

“We believe that Sunday worship is essential for families and that there is no better way than to put God first and spend time with him as a family in his home or at one of the evangelisms “Daniels said.

“Friendship is not a judging Church because we believe that we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God, as scripture teaches. We all need Jesus. We are all works in progress because He changes us inside out and not the other way around. We believe that Jesus is the ONLY way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through Him. John 14:6.

“We would be blessed to have you and your family with us at Friendship, Outreach at the Mall, or both, every week!”
